Morgan has been making Carbtune vacuum gauges in various forms since 1979. The company has always tried to produce the best device possible for the most affordable price.
In any of the independent tests
carried out on Carbtunes over the years they have always equalled
or outperformed other equipment regardless of the price.
The original Carbtunes made in 1979 were very basic but worked
very well.

Over the years we have built up a vast amount of knowledge on balancing carburettors and there have been countless small improvements and several complete redesigns to make the equipment more sophisticated and easier to use. All the Carbtunes had a common thread in using mercury as the operating medium. |
When we decided to design the Carbtune II we had a completely
blank sheet of paper and all options were considered.
It had to have all the advantages of the Carbtune I, simple, accurate,
easy to read, affordable and reliable but it also had to be mercury-free,
robust, compact and user serviceable.
We think the Carbtune II has met all the criteria and we hope that you do too. INSTRUCTIONS. Set-Up. Damping. Without damping the rods will fluctuate wildly. There are two components to the damping. 1. The small amount of friction between the rods and guides which is overcome as soon as the pulsating vacuum of the engine is connected. 2. The air-flow restrictors that fit inside the rubber tubes and damp the fluctuations. There will always be a small amount of fluctuation and this is necessary for the gauges to work properly. The dampers must always be used. Do not oil the rods. How to make the dampers. In your kit with the adaptors you will have received two small pieces of plastic tubing. One is clear with a thick wall and fine bore. The other is extremely fine. With a new blade in a Stanley knife cut (on a piece of wood) the thick wall tube into four roughly equal pieces. Then cut the very fine tube into four roughly equal pieces. Cutting the fine tube at an angle to make it pointy makes it easier to insert for the next step. Push each extremely fine tube a few millimetres firmly into the bore of the thicker tube. Refer to drawing opposite. These are the four restrictors. Now cut about 10cm off the end of each 1 metre rubber tube. Push each restrictor firmly into the 10cm rubber tube with the fine tube tail pointing out. Now push the remaining 90cm rubber tubes firmly onto the tail side of the restrictors. Restricted part of rubber tube goes towards carb. Fine tube in restrictor must point away from engine. The dampers will reduce fluctuations to acceptable levels for most bikes but some bikes may still give readings that pulsate too much even with the dampers in place. Moving the gauges very slightly off vertical will add some extra friction and damping but make sure the rods are still pulsating slightly or the readings may be affected. The rods need to pulsate to some degree for the gauge to work properly.
